Hammerspace Revolutionizes Data Access for AI and Analytics Workloads

Hammerspace's Global Data Platform unifies fragmented data silos and maximizes GPU infrastructure efficiency, driving 10x revenue growth through innovative storage solutions.

Hammerspace is tackling one of the biggest challenges facing organizations deploying AI and analytics at scale: efficiently managing and accessing massive amounts of data across distributed infrastructure while controlling costs. The company posted remarkable growth in 2024, with 10x revenue growth and a 32% increase in customers, driven by surging demand for solutions that can unite fragmented data silos and maximize the performance of expensive GPU infrastructure.

"Two seismic shifts are fueling unprecedented growth - the rising need for cost- and power-efficient infrastructure to support GPU computing at scale and the rapid adoption of hybrid cloud and multi-data center architectures," said David Flynn, Hammerspace CEO and Co-founder during the 60th IT Press Tour.

The company's Global Data Platform takes a novel approach to eliminating storage bottlenecks and data silos that have traditionally hampered AI and analytics initiatives. Rather than requiring organizations to copy data between systems or standardize on a single storage vendor, Hammerspace creates a unified global namespace that provides seamless access to data regardless of where it resides - from edge locations to data centers and clouds.

Transformative Technology Stack

Hammerspace's platform can be deployed on bare metal, virtual machines, or in the cloud in under 30 minutes. The solution requires no client software beyond Linux and provides a direct client-to-storage data path that can drive GPUs at peak performance. The platform creates a global namespace, allowing read/write data access everywhere while sharing data instead of copying it. It also automates data movement for sharing, cloud bursting, and data lifecycle management.

Solving the GPU Storage Challenge

One of Hammerspace's most significant innovations is its Tier 0 storage capability, introduced in late 2024. This technology transforms the local NVMe storage in GPU servers - often unused - into ultra-fast shared storage. For organizations investing heavily in GPU infrastructure for AI workloads, this delivers multiple benefits:

  • Improved Resource Utilization: Previously stranded local storage becomes part of a unified storage pool

  • Enhanced Performance: Data moves directly to GPUs at local NVMe speeds

  • Reduced Costs: Organizations can fully leverage existing storage resources

  • Power Efficiency: Less data movement means lower energy consumption

The impact is significant. In one case study, a deployment of 1,000 GPU servers with 30PB of local SSDs was able to unify that capacity with 20PB of external NVMe storage, creating a 50PB unified storage environment. This eliminated storage silos while maintaining ultra-fast access for GPU workloads.

MLPerf Benchmark Results

Impressive MLPerf Storage Benchmark results back the company's performance claims. In tests using the 3D-Unet workload, Hammerspace's Tier 0 Internal Storage demonstrated superior performance compared to traditional solutions. The platform achieved 33 accelerators with a single client, while extrapolated results with 18 clients showed potential for supporting up to 594 accelerators - significantly outperforming other tested solutions.

Strategic Partnerships

In January 2025, Hammerspace announced a strategic alliance with Hitachi Vantara to deliver new-generation data intelligent AI infrastructure solutions. The partnership focuses on three key areas:

  • High Performance at Scale: Utilizing Hammerspace's standards-based parallel file system

  • Simplified Data Access and Orchestration: Leveraging the global data orchestration platform

  • Ease of Deployment: Incorporating the latest AI-ready infrastructure capabilities

Real-World Validation

Major organizations are already seeing benefits from Hammerspace's approach. Meta deployed the solution for Llama large language model training, with their engineering team noting that "Hammerspace enables engineers to perform interactive debugging for jobs using thousands of GPUs as code changes are immediately accessible to all nodes within the environment."

The technology has also been adopted by government agencies like the National Science Foundation and Department of Defense for research data analysis, and by media companies like Mathematic Studio for managing visual effects production across global sites.

Industry Recognition

The company's innovations have earned significant recognition, including being named a Leader in both Cloud File Storage and Unstructured Data Management by Coldago Research. Additional 2024 accolades include Data Storage Innovation of the Year from Data Breakthrough Awards and Gold in TechTarget's Data Storage and Management Tools Product of the Year.

"Hammerspace has been moving fast for the past few years and shakes established market positions thanks to David Flynn's disruptive ideas," said Philippe Nicolas, Analyst and Founder, Coldago Research. "With global file services, ubiquitous data access, parallel file I/Os, multi-protocols, multi-sites, multi-clouds, and key developments for AI-oriented workloads, the team has made significant progress."

Global Expansion

Hammerspace recently appointed Jeff Giannetti as Chief Revenue Officer to capitalize on growing worldwide demand and launched operations across Asia. The company expanded its workforce by 75% in 2024, with significant growth in go-to-market and customer support teams. It has also established resources in China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and India to support its international expansion.

Customer satisfaction metrics underscore the value organizations find, with a Gross Revenue Retention rate above 95% and Net Revenue Retention exceeding 330% - indicating strong customer retention and significant expansion within existing accounts.

"The days of proprietary software locking data to the systems that created it, risky and tedious manual data copies, and IT headaches caused by proprietary client-side software are over," noted Flynn. "Our growth reflects how our Global Data Platform and data orchestration capabilities are redefining what's possible - unifying fragmented, siloed data and enabling industries to achieve unprecedented efficiency and innovation."

As organizations continue to expand their use of AI, analytics, and distributed computing, Hammerspace's ability to eliminate data silos while maximizing infrastructure efficiency positions the company for continued growth. The platform's standards-based approach and focus on simplifying data access regardless of location address key challenges that have historically limited organizations' ability to leverage their data assets fully.
